Who are the Best Candidates for FotoFacial RF?
Anyone who suffers from cosmetic conditions of the face and body including:
- Sun damage
- Aging with wrinkles, skin laxity and a decline of skin texture
- Rosacea, redness and broken capillaries (“red spots”)
- Sun spots, age spots and hyperpigmentation (“brown spots”)
What is FotoFacial RF? The Magic of Elos?
Syneron Medical is the leading global manufacturer of aesthetic devices used to treat the skin. In the past, the most common non-surgical cosmetic procedures involved the use of lasers or intense pulsed light to penetrate the outer layers of the skin (the epidermis) and to heat the tissues lying deep within the lower layers of the skin (the dermis). The problem with these procedures is the risk that the high energy needed to reach the target area will overheat the surrounding tissues and cause damage to the skin.
Syneron’s latest technological innovation is a non-surgical treatment that penetrates the skin without overheating the surrounding tissues. Elos (electro-optical synergy) combines intense pulsed light (IPL) with radio frequency (RF). The use of two different forms of energy (light and electricity) creates a synergy:
- The light-based component (IPL) converts optical energy into heat and selectively pre-heats the target area beneath the outer layers of the skin
- The electrical component (RF) directs the current to the target area within the lower layers of the skin and creates thermal heating.
Elos, the combination of electro and optical energy, permits the use of lower levels of light and heat that do not affect that epidermis and are safe for all skin types and skin color.
How is FotoFacial RF performed?
The procedure is simple. The area to be treated is covered with a thin layer of clear gel that is conductive to radio frequency. The hand piece of the machine is dynamically cooled and is pressed against the skin to reduce the surface temperature. The hand piece delivers gentle pulses of light and electrical current that penetrate the skin and are directed to the target area.
How long is the Treatment Program?
Each treatment lasts about 30 minutes. Because the treatments are gentle, most people require 4-6 sessions at three-week intervals. The improvement with be gradual, but steady. After the completion of your treatment, your skin will be rejuvenated.
How Does the Treatment Feel?
Initially, you will feel a brief sensation of a “warm pinch” as the energy from the light and current penetrates the skin. As the treatment proceeds, you will feel a warm and tingling sensation.
How Will I Feel After the Treatment?
Most people have no side effects from the treatment. Some people appear “flushed” for a few hours after the treatment due to the heat generated by the energy. The treatment does not affect the outer layers of the skin. As a result, there is no “down time” and most people return to their normal activities as soon as the treatment has been completed.
Are the Treatments Safe and Effective?
Yes. The combination of pulsed light and radio frequency permits the use of lower levels of energy that is safe for all skin types and skin color. The pre-cooling of the skin and the targeting of energy prevents the overheating of surrounding tissue. There have been many clinical trials to test the effectiveness of Elos technology. Dr. Patrick Bitter Jr. reports that 88% of his patients observed a smoother skin with visible improvement in fine wrinkles, pore size and pigmentation. Dermatologic Surgery, 2000. His patients report a 50-75% improvement in redness, flushing, fine wrinkles, broken capillaries, pore size and skin smoothness. A study published in Cosmetic Dermatology in 2005 concluded that the system is “safe and effective”. A recent study by Professors of Dermatology at St. Louis University and Northwestern University concluded that “RF treatment is safe, easily tolerated and effective” and results in “an overall improvement in skin texture”. Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, March 2009.
