Summer Makeup Do’s and Don’ts

I could be wrong, but my guess is that most of you would not wear a heavy sweater to work tomorrow, or pick out your warmest pair of tights for your friend’s birthday party on Friday. Why? Because it is summer time, and you would be sweating from the moment these articles of clothing touched your body. Am I right?

Similarly, we should be aware of how we are dressing our faces from season to season. The same products that are appropriate in the winter, may not be the best choice in the summer.

Keep in mind your daily beauty regimen as you take a look at these Do’s and Don’ts to keep your face looking fresh through the heat.

DOLook for long lasting and waterproof products.

The market is flooded with eye shadows, lipsticks, blushes, etc., that are guaranteed to beat the heat- and most of them work! Test drive a few of these products out to find the best ones for you.

DON’T…Use waterproof mascara everyday.

I know; I JUST said to look for waterproof products, but mascara is one exception. Wearing waterproof mascara everyday can be harsh on you natural lash. Most of them truly do stay on, which means the removal process can often take a few of your own lashes captive (eek!) Save it for the special occasions.

DOExfoliate.

Make way for those new healthy skin cells to get to the surface by regularly getting rid of the dry old ones that sit on top. Depending how rough your exfoliator is, you should exfoliate anywhere from 1-3 times a week. Some are even gentle enough to do every other day. Just be sure not too over-exfoliate. This can cause redness and irritation.

DON’TWear full coverage foundation.

Give your skin a chance to breath in the summer. Less is more. When shopping for an everyday foundation, look for a natural finish. One that still allows the natural texture of your skin to show, while evening out the complexion.

DOProtect your skin from the sun.

SPF is important everyday, every season, but especially in the summer because we tend to be exposed to the sun for longer periods of time. Sun protection is one of the best things you can do for your skin to keep lines and wrinkles at bay.

DON’TSkip your daily moisturizer.

Often times I hear clients say they do not use moisturizer because they feel that their skin produces enough natural oils in the summer. News flash: Oily skin needs moisturizer, too! No matter how oily you may be, it is still important to use a treatment on your skin every day (and night if possible.)

DOChoose a daily moisturizer that is lightweight.

Don’t force yourself to bathe in extremely rich creams if you don’t think you need it. Choose a moisturizer with a thin texture, like a gel or thin serum, so that you’re not feeling oppressed by the weight of a heavy cream that would be more appropriate in the winter when skin can get dehydrated.

DON’T…Forget lip balm!

Chapped lips is a condition most commonly associated with winter time; but guess what? The sun can have a serious effect on the texture of your lips. Choose a balm that has SPF to protect from burning and keep your lips soft and supple.

DOBe bold with your lipstick.

Now that your lips are as smooth as a baby’s bottom, choose the most daring shade, and swipe it on! Pink, coral, red, just do it! A bold lip is a fun way to dress up your face and summer-ize your look. Too daring? Start with a sheer lipstick formula or even a lip gloss to add some color without the boldness of a full coverage lipstick.

DON’T…Forget to remove your makeup every night!

Keep your pores clear, free of oil and dirt, because chances are high that you have sweat at least once today, whether it was in your Zumba class or just being packed like sardines on the rush hour subway train. Makeup removal is so crucial in the summer to prevent breakouts and clogged pores.
