A bold lip is one of the easiest ways to pull your look together in no time. With your lips stealing the spotlight, it is best to keep all other makeup to a minimum; that means less work for you! Follow these important steps below to wear your bold lip like a pro.
One of the most offensive makeup mistakes I see is a beautiful lip color applied on dry, cracked, and chapped skin. Stop the madness! I understand that this season’s weather is often the culprit of an undesirable lip condition, but all it takes is a little tender loving care to nurture that pout back to health. How, you say? Exfoliate and hydrate!
In the evening before bed, generously apply a heavy lip balm (sometimes I use pure Vaseline) to the entire lip area and let sit for 15-20 minutes.
Then, blot excess balm away with a tissue.
Using an old, soft toothbrush, gently exfoliate the lip with small side to side and circular strokes. For extremely dry lips, use a special lip exfoliator such as E.L.F. Studio Lip Exfoliator.
After you have removed the dead layer of skin, apply more balm so that your lips can hydrate throughout the night. When you wake up, your lips will be so smooth that you will want to kiss yourself in the mirror!
Red? Plum? Pink? So many choices! While skin tone should be taken into consideration when choosing a shade, it is also important to think about your current mood or how you would like to feel. Let me explain. Makeup is a great way to express yourself. It also has the power to transform your mood. Sounds crazy, but it is true. For example: red lips convey power and sexiness; plums are rich, regal, and elegant; pinks show your flirty, fun, and approachable side. There is a time and a place for each and every variety of a bold lip. Above all, when wearing your chosen color, wear it with confidence!

Your lip is prepped; you have chosen your shade, now you are ready to apply!
It is important to keep the lip area dry before applying your lipstick. Use some translucent powder (pressed or loose) to absorb any excess moisture or oil from around the mouth.
Always line the lips when you are wearing a statement making lip color. If you cannot match the lipstick color exactly, it is safe to go with a liner that is close to your natural lip color or a clear liner such as Sally Hanson Invisible Lip Liner. Liner will keep your lips defined, prevent color from migrating or feathering into lines around the lip area, and will prolong the wear of your lip color. Use the side of the pencil to trace the natural lip line while slightly feathering the liner towards the inside of the lips.
Swipe on your lip color and then blot once with a tissue. Dust again with translucent powder, and then apply another layer of lip color. This will transform almost any lipstick into a long-wear!
